Client Comment
[We] committed to 35 single family home rehabs in 18 months — thus severely increasing the scale of construction — and decided to purchase the HDP software to ease in mass production of scope of work specifications. The software has helped to streamline and standardize the construction projects that are undertaken as part of the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.

Purchasing
Q. Do I need to buy a license of HDP for my server (network)?
A.

No, a license is not needed for your server, only for each computer you’d like to have Housing Developer Pro on. Each license of HDP can be set up either as a standalone installation or a client (networked) installation.

Q. How do I import my project data from HDP 1.0 or HDP 2.0 into Housing Developer Pro?
A.

You can import specs and checklists from HDP 1.0 and HDP 2.0 into HDP 3.0 and newer versions.

Unfortunately at this time importing entire addresses is not possible. However, you can finish up any existing projects in HDP 1.0 or 2.0; those versions can be run simultaneously with newer versions.

To import specs and checklists from HDP 1.0 or HDP 2.0 into a newer version of Housing Developer Pro:

  1. Open Housing Developer Pro 3.0 or newer
  2. Click on the “Tools” tab in the top left-hand corner
  3. Click on “Import HDP 1/2/3/4 Data”
  4. Under “Which version of HDP would you like to import data from?” select the version that your specs and checklists are from
  5. Under “Where is the spec data to import located?” click on the “…” button to select the path to your HDP 1.0 or HDP 2.0 database
  6. Click “OK”
  7. Review Specs for Import window will open. New specs from the file that do not conflict with your existing specs will automatically be imported. However, specs that are listed in this window do differ from your existing specs’ spec number or spec description. Double click on any spec to review and select which “Action to Take”
  8. After all of the specs have been reviewed, click “Proceed with Import”
  9. Import Complete window will appear to confirm that new specs have been imported

Q. I have HDP 1.0 or 2.0; what’s new in HDP?
A. Based on users’ recommendations, improvements were made to make HDP more efficient and user-friendly. Major changes include a fresh interface, “wizards” that walk you through entering bids and draws, and new features that make HDP easier to use on-site.

See HDP’s Version History for details on what has been new in each version since HDP 3.0.

Technical Setup
Q. How do I move HDP from my old computer to my new computer? (My current HDP is set up as a client installation).
A.
  1. Begin by downloading and installing Housing Developer Pro onto your new computer. Note: If the version available on our website is not the same version you have on your old computer, contact us to get the version you’re eligible for.
  2. On the new computer, open HDP, click on the Tools tab then Database Location, select Client Installation, and use the “…” button to locate the path to your database on your server. The database is called hdp4.mdb which is a Microsoft Access database. The icon is a white piece of paper with a pinkish-purple key.
  3. Click OK and close HDP. Reopen HDP to see if your projects are showing. If they aren’t, call us. If they are, move on to the next step. If HDP says your trial has expired, call us.
  4. At this point, you can see your HDP projects on both the old and new computer but you only want HDP on your new computer. Your new computer is currently just running a trial version of HDP so you want to uninstall HDP on the old computer to free up your license for the new computer. To uninstall, open the HDP4 folder (which by default is located at C:\Program Files\HDP4) and double click on the file called uninst.exe. (Note: The file names are the same for all versions of HDP. Just look for a different version number in the file name: 1, 2, or 3).
Note: Your new computer will not be licensed. Make sure you have completed step 4; uninstalling has freed up your license to use on the new computer. Call us at 717 356-2300 to license HDP on your new computer.

Q. How do I set up HDP so that my co-workers and I can share project information and specs?
A. Housing Developer Pro can be set up for multiple users as a networked (or “client”) installation. In a networked installation, all licensed computers share a single HDP data file that is placed on your network server. This setup allows users to access and share the Library of Specifications, Checklists, addresses and other HDP 3 functions.

If your organization plans to use HDP as a client installation, you’ll want to set this up as soon as possible, ideally before beginning to use the software.

Detailed instructions for setting up a client installation of Housing Developer Pro can be found in the Getting Started Guide on pages 39-40.

Basic instructions:

  1. Begin by downloading and installing Housing Developer Pro onto the individual computers that will run HDP.
  2. Copy one hdp3.mdb file and each computer’s hdp3.lf file. These files can likely be found in the default directory location at C:\Program Files\HDP3. Place a copy of the files in a directory on your server; each computer must have full access to this directory.
  3. In HDP, go to the Tools tab in the menu and select Database Location from the list.
  4. Set the Install Type window to Client Installation.
  5. Set the “Backend Location” to the network directory that contains the hdp3.mdb and hdp3.lf files.
  6. Repeat items 3, 4, and 5 above on each computer that you want to share the network data file.
